Energy-efficient, software-defined, all-optical circuit switching is enabling new network architectures in scale-out and multi-tenant datacentres to automate management of the fibre layer and facilitate rapid orchestration of optically-connected resources.

What is optical switching?

A fully programmable optical network improves service velocity and datacentre efficiency through self-provisioning of virtualised fibres on demand; releasing stranded compute and storage resources in containerised solutions; providing autonomous optical layer protection for critical connections; and enabling dynamic, low latency, router bypass to reduce packet switch congestion and improve server utilisation. In this talk we show how today’s low-loss dark fibre optical circuit switches can virtualise fibre layer connectivity and provide scalability to reach tens of thousands of endpoints.
